One day, a student encountered a multi-choice question, which says that whether CO2 can be exploited to make fuel. “Are you kidding?” he laughed, “If CO2 can burn, and so will the earth!” However, he is wrong. A new technology called Carbon Filter Process (CFP) have been experimented and evaluated to make this come true. The technology focuses on separating carbon dioxide from power-plant flue gas with carbon-rich sorbents at ambient pressure, and punching captured CO2 to oil field to enhance the recovery of oil and methane. Although CFP has imperfections for citizens to opposite, there are several evident showing that CFP is a beneficial technology.
The cost is the most considerable concept of a new technology. Opponents claim that the expenditure of establishing a new plant power may be over the environmental benefit, and there are other cheap ways to reduce CO2’s emission. Actually, they are not the first one concerning it. One of CFP developers’ goals is to archive a low cost as much as possible, so they have done a lot of research to fulfill this goal. The materials used as sorbents are cheap and easy get, such as activated carbon, and the sorbents can absorb CO2 at ambient temperature without high pressure. Moreover, simple steam heat can make the sorbents recover. Consequently, the cost of recovered one ton of CO2 is only $2 compared to the cost of $40-50/ton nowadays. This reduction of cost is significant.
Opponents also worry about its practical utility. People are wondering CFP will make a significative or just a bit of difference. Whatever are the effects, this technology is friendly to the environment. As we all know, CO2 is the main cause of global warming. Although there has been proposed several policies, such as the Kyoto Protocol, to establish a cooperation among countries about reducing the CO2 emission. However, Kyoto Protocol is not been fully accepted by almost countries, since the protocol affect their industries’ developments. However, CFP is an efficient way to reduce CO2 emission without compromising industries’ expansion. With this technology, more countries could participate in this beneficial activity to work together and protect the environment. If every country can join this activity and make a distribution, it could make a reduction to the CO2 emission.
Some corporations do not want to adopt this technology because they think it can do nothing to their profits. Actually, it is not a profitable alms deed for corporations to take actions protecting environment. By doing good, the company can show its concerns towards the climate changes to the public and can gain a good reputation from this action. Corporate social responsibility is a hot and tough issue facing by big corporations nowadays and actually it is one of determinant factors of companies’ competitive strength. By doing good, a company can gain a good corporate social responsibility and an increasing market share.
In conclusion, citizens should support the CFP. It is economical as a new technology, and it is our responsibility to protect the planet.

E-profilo 4

The goal of this work is to explore a low-pressure Carbon Filter Process technology, which is, an inline flue gas Filter that captures CO2 by a carbonaceous sorbent, and, more specifically, to evaluate its capacity and CO2/N2 selectivity, to scale them up to a Carbon Filter Process.

Before I list down the advantages of utilizing this technology, let us look at some interesting topics about CO2 (carbon dioxide). Most of us may think C02 as a useless gas except in photosynthesis process, but actually, pure C02 plays a significant role in industries, especially in enhancing oil and methane recovery. So if we can get carbon-rich gas from the existing resources, just get it.

Firstly, this technology is beneficial to the environment. CO2 is the main cause of global warming. Although there has been proposed several policies, such as the Kyoto Protocol, to establish a cooperation among countries to reduce the CO2 emission. However, Kyoto Protocol has not been fully accepted by all countries; since it may affect their industries’ developments. Carbon Filter Process is an efficient way to reduce CO2 emission without compromising industries’ developments. With this technology, more countries could participate in this beneficial activity to work together and protect the environment.

The second reason is that, the Carbon Filter Process does not cost a lot. This Carbon Filter Process requires neither expensive materials nor flue-gas compression; and it is easy to heat integrate with an existing or grassroots power plant without affecting the cost of the produced electricity too much. Moreover, it does not need lots of continuous investments.

Thirdly, by adopting this technology, the company can show its concerns towards the climate changes to the public and can gain a good reputation from this action. Corporate social responsibility is a hot and tough issue facing by big corporations nowadays and actually it is one of determinant factors of companies’ competitive strength. By doing good, a company can gain a good corporate social responsibility and an increasing market share. Thinking about what Coca cola has done to beautify its social images; you will understand the importance of this point.

In conclusion, people should support the Carbon Filter Process. Not only because it is friendly to the environment and economy effective, but also our responsibility to the planet.

A polluted earth-an inconvenient truth

It is an astonishing discovery if we put two earth space photos of different time together. Obviously, we will find that our earth is becoming dirtier from initially quite a green one. Pollution is taking in charge of our earth now and it not only changes our everyday life, but also converts surface of the earth, and these effects are getting more serious now. It is an emergency to get the information that how the earth is today in case to come out general ideas to settle these problems down.

The most popular issue is global worming leaded by revealing large amount of green gases such as carbon dioxide. It is popular because all the countries share one atmosphere and the air flows to bring green house everywhere. This issue has caused a little influence on climate and the sea level. As climate changes, few agrarian countries have to convert several crops initial planting season and public policies to incentive farmers to change the crops they always planted. This year China is faced a serious drought problem involved several provinces caused by no snow this winter. In fact, the real cause for this disaster is global warming. It heats up surface of the earth and vaporize water droplets which could assemble together to produce rain. Another effect the global warming has caused is the increase of sea level. Thinking about Venice and you will find it.

Another kind of pollution is drinking water pollution. The industry water and dirt’s revealing caused by uncompleted policies of controlling the purification of factory effluent is the largest resource of water pollution. This pollution has caused millions of people’s abnormal deaths including 6000 children every day.

Other than these two, the earth is facing more and more pollutions such as land pollution, ocean pollution and air pollution.

As a conclusion, the earth is in emergency now and it needs us to bring it back to life. It is the time for us to take an action and defend our common home with pollutions now.

Global warming

Global warming is when the earth heats up mostly resulting from releasing greenhouse gas like carbon dioxide. Global warming has affected global climate and kinds of animals’ life habits in a large scale. Nowadays it has be considered as the most priorities change in the recent few years and it is a world change for we share one atmosphere.
The effects of global warming are quite serious now. It should attract all of the world’s attention and deserves human taking actions to control it. Fighting with global warming is some kind of fighting with ourselves.
The useful way to control it is to control the discharge of greenhouse gases, which means we must make industry process more efficient or reduce the development of economy. One way to increase the efficient of producing is increasing the speed of changing old energies to new energies such as solar and nuclear partially from now on in the whole world. It needs the few countries which has high-technologies to corporate and help the other countries.
Another way to reduce the discharge is to find efficient technologies to turn greenhouse gases to liquid and hide it into the sea. Though this is a perfect idea to reduce air contents of greenhouse gas, it has not been accepted by humans, because they considering the effects it may made on seawater. However, large numbers of theories in environment science have indicated that the effects will not be as much as in human’s consideration. The reason why this technology is not applied is that it cost a lot of money and other resource and not all of countries are able to afford it. It needs some large countries such as USA to develop and apply it first. However, the fact is not as it should be.
In my point of view, it needs every one of us to make a little different to control the speed of global warming. Not using one-off plastic bag when you go shopping and refusing using one-off chopsticks when you eating in the mall. There are many ways to contribute to reducing the discharge of greenhouse gas in everyday’s life. Help the earth is equal to help us and our descendants.

My comment of Prof Seeram Ramakrishna's article

Briefly speaking, to think and analyse systematically and critically for an engineer, the curriculum and pedagogical approach is important and fundamental, but the understanding to knowledge and practices to apply the abilities is the more important ability for an engineer.

There are handful of methods for an engineer to be trained analyse systematically. The main and fund mental method is to get and digest one's own core modules. Also, one is required to learn modules from other departments and faculties. This a chance to learn some other useful information to open one's mind and broaden one's vision. All these are the basic requirement for critical thinking and systematically analysing.

In the whole education, students are suppose to design projects , which require students to arrange the procedure of the projects and come out suitable researches to approach the problems on his own, and in the process of fulfilling projects, students can learn how to think and analyse the reality problems in a systematical way. More over, students can involve some organisations ,such as NOC , to develop their skills to think and analyse.Through the discussion and process, students can not only learn how to arrange one's own work, but also learn how teamwork can assistant one to get work done easily.

The universities prepare every students bulks of available resources and e-resources, which contain essays and articles written by wise people in the world. Students should take advantage of these beneficial materials and read them to understand what wise people are thinking about and to apply these useful advice to one's own work.

In a nutshell, to develop an mind which can think and analyse systematically needs a lot of work, and fortunately, the universities involve mostly of the resources for one to develop this mind.
